Book Review: Advanced Oracle Tuning and Administration.
By Eyal Aronoff, Kevin Loney and Noorali Sonawalla. Published
by Osborne. ISBN 0-07-882241-6. UK Price about 26.00
I have to admit a bias with this one; I have a great deal of
respect for Eyal Aronoff. I particularly like the SQLab product
which sniffs out SQL statements in the Oracle cache, and enables
you to get out an "explain plan" on them. As it
happens, Quest Software (my old company) have employed Eyal for
some time, and sell the SQLab product. It is also supplied as a
trial CD in the back of this book (although beware - this is
version 1.4, whereas version 3.0 has just hit the streets !).
The only criticism I have is that certain fundamental
"housekeeping" activities (such as re-building indexes
and recomputing statistics) don't get the attention which I would
like to see. Apart from that, this is an extremely valuable book.
A recommended YES for any Oracle DBAs.
