Creating an IT Production Architecture function: the forgotten Architecture role.

Presentation Abstract:

The goal of Enterprise Architecture must be to design applications that can continue to deliver business benefit during the course of their Production lifetime. Typically, the Production lifetime of an application can be measured in years.

Therefore, if an application is successful, it is essential that the Production implications of the design are assessed as early a possible in the design cycle.

Creating an IT Production Architecture function: the forgotten Architecture role
Prepared for the UK Oracle User Group Management Information SIG in 2007, this presentation covers the importance of Production Architecture for ensuing long term viability of IT solutions. PPT file is created from Powerpoint 2003. ukoug-mi-200702.ppt - 2.2 MB.

Production Suitability Matrix
This spreadsheet summarises the Production Suitability Criteria, and acts as a useful checklist chart for assessing the Production Suitability of a software product. ProdMatrix.xls - 56 KB.

Not to include Production Architecture in the design is to risk the creation of an application which is simply "thrown over the wall" to the Production team. Such an application can be expensive to support in Production; The costs of support can sometimes offset any business benefits.

The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the role of the Production Architecture team, and the unique contribution that it can make to ensure that the delivered application can be supported in Production at optimal costs.

Part of the key to this is the clear definition of the "Production Worthiness" criteria (Scalability, Reliability and Stability, Resilience, Backup and Recovery, Security, Monitoring and Management, Supportability), and a design framework for including them.

Based on many years experience in Solutions Architecture and IT Production Consultancy, this presentation will explain how to create a Production Architecture role, its remit and objectives, and how applications can be assessed for their impact on Production - resulting in successful delivery and "Life After Go-Live".

Key topics:

  • Development and Production - two different cultures
  • What is "Production-worthiness"? - Definition.
  • How to assess applications for Production Worthiness
  • Building the relationships between Production and Development
  • Production Architecture in the Context of Enterprise Architecture.
  • Establishing Production Standards.
  • Building Applications for the "Long Term"

Case Study

Part of the role of the Production Architecture function is to evaluate different technologies for their suitability from a Production viewpoint.

So in order to reinforce the usefulness of this seminar, we will be working on a joint case study together as part of the seminar.

The products to be considered have not been finalised, but may include do a validation of DataGuard vs RAC from a Production viewpoint

SIG Details:

In 2006 the UKOUG launched a new special interest group - the Management & Infrastructure SIG.

This community is an opportunity to bring together DBAs, Database Managers, Infrastructure Managers and even IT Directors, to help focus on the higher level issues of Infrastructure Design, Product Selection and Best Practise for the whole database landscape.

Whereas other SIGs may focus on the technical implementation of particular Oracle feature, this SIG will help you decide which of those features to implement, understand the method, timescales and costs, and know how they fit in with all the products of your IT infrastructure.
